Dr. Tyrone Howard
Dr.
Tyrone Howard is an experienced educator, presenter, and researcher of
multicultural and social studies education. Currently, he is an Associate
Professor, and Director of Center X at the University of California,
Los Angeles. Dr. Howard is the Associate Editor of both Theory and Research
in Social Education and Journal for the Professoriate. His main research
interests include social studies education, urban education, and multicultural
education.
Dr. Howard is presently series author for Harcourt School Publishers Harcourt
Social Studies, Grades K through 6. In that capacity, he has helped develop the
pedagogy for the series, its scope and sequence, and its content. Dr. Howard
has also served as a consultant for Harcourt StoryTown, and Harcourt Math and
Science Programs.
The recipient of many awards, Dr. Howard was most recently awarded the
Distinguished Teaching Award for Teaching Excellence at UCLA. And last
year he was recognized by the American Educational Research Association
with an Early Career Award, which honors exemplary scholars in the
first decade of their academic careers. He has published over 35 peer
reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and book reviews. His upcoming
book which examines race, culture, and the achievement gap will be
released in 2009.
He holds degrees from University of Washington; California State University,
Dominguez Hills; and University of California, Irvine. Dr. Howard is
a valued member of several professional organizations such as National
Council for the Social Studies, National Alliance of Black School Education,
and the National Association for Multicultural Education.
