Bernard Hamilton

Dr. Bernard Hamilton has been recently elected as the next President-Elect of the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE). NABSE founded in 1970 is the nation's premier non-profit organization directed to furthering the academic success for the nation's children particular children of African descent.

Dr. Hamilton has been a life member of NABSE since 1981 and has been active as a Greater Louisville Alliance of Black School Educators member, founder and president of the Mississippi State affiliate and the Rockford, Illinois affiliate. He was also president of the Las Vegas affiliate and founder of the New Mexico affiliate. Most recently, Dr. Hamilton has served as the Secretary of the NABSE 501c3 Foundation. As secretary he re-initiated the Foundation's Gold Bell Campaign.

He served four years on NABSE Board of Directors beginning in 1998 as a superintendent representing nearly 300 African American superintendents across America. As a superintendent from West Point, Mississippi he also served as the national membership chair for NABSE. He has also served as the Nominating Committee Chair, the Awards Program chair and held numerous committee positions. The Aspiring Superintendent's Academy was launched under his leadership in 2005 at the national conference in Detroit, Michigan. This academy inspired the expansion of other NABSE academies to include the Principal's Academy and the Teacher's Academy each November.

During his 35 years in education he has been a bus driver, teacher, counselor, principal, coach, superintendent, interim superintendent, college professor, associate commissioner of education, and national public speaker. He currently works for the Title I Office as an administrator primarily reviewing school budgets, providing technical assistance to Title I Schools, and mentoring principals and their leadership teams. Dr. Hamilton has been recognized nationally as a principal and superintendent. As a principal of four diverse schools in two states, he significantly raised the achievement level of his students. When he was superintendent, he merged a failing county district with his city district and raised the achievement level of both districts to meet state standards and achieved national recognition for his innovative use of federal funds. As Kentucky's Associate Commissioner of Education for Extended School Services (ESS), Primary Education, Family Youth Services and Equity he modeled and initiated Kentucky's first model for closing the achievement gap to districts throughout the state of Kentucky.

His mission includes empowering community, school staff and students to meet their highest potential through life long learning and a vision of hope that includes hard work for a better tomorrow. As the incoming NABSE president-elect and active Christian he will speak out boldly for children nationally, increase the visibility of affiliates, expand professional development opportunities, and provide a model for growth and integrity to our future leaders and children. Dr. Hamilton is married and has three children and two grand kids.
