LaVerne Hooks

After 38 years of service in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, LaVerne Hooks was called back from retirement and is currently principal of Almira K-8 Academy in Cleveland, Ohio. She is the former principal of Garrett Morgan Cleveland School of Science Academy in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. She began teaching in Cleveland in 1974, and has served in various classroom and leadership roles before becoming an administrator.

LaVerne received her undergraduate degree from Tuskege University in 1972 and a Masters degree from the University of Akron in 1977. She completed her Administrative Certification Program from Cleveland State University and is currently a doctoral candidate in Educational Administration at the University of Akron.

LaVerne Hooks has served as a member of DACOWITS (Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Service), after being nominated by the United States Coast Guard. (The United States Coast Guard has a Partnership Program with Garrett Morgan Cleveland School of Science.) In 2000 LaVerne Hooks was selected as an exemplary principal to participate in the Pogue Institute for Leadership and Management. As an exemplary principal, she was a presenter at Harvard University's School of Educational Leadership for School Administrators; served as a mentor and coach for district principals; and assisted with facilitation of development, articulation and implementation of professional development to improve principal performance. She was affiliated with the Ohio Principals Leadership Academy and the Ohio Principals Entry-Year Leadership Program as a mentor and coach. LaVerne is past president of The Cleveland Council of Administrators and Supervisors; served on the Board of Directors for the Ohio Association of Secondary School Administrators; a past member of the Nominating Panel for the selection of School Board members for the Cleveland Municipal School District; former Executive Board member of the Ohio Middle School Association; and other memberships with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, National Middle School Association, and the Association For Supervision and Curriculum Development. LaVerne is the current president of the Metropolitan Cleveland Alliance of Black School Educators.
