Bernard Hamilton, Ed. D.

Dr. Bernard Hamilton is the current Secretary of the NABSE Foundation Board. He has served in this capacity for two years and initiated the annual Gold Bell Campaign during his first year as secretary. He was elected as the new President-Elect of NABSE beginning November 2009.

Dr. Hamilton is a life member of NABSE since 1981 and past President and Founder of Mississippi State affiliate, Rockford, Illinois affiliate, and the New Mexico affiliate. He also served as past president of the Las Vegas affiliate.

He served 4 years on the Board of Directors for NABSE as the chair of the Superintendent's Commission from 1998 to 2001. He has also served as the National Membership Chair, the Nominating Committee Chair, the Awards Program chair and numerous other committee positions. As chair of the Superintendent's Commission NABSE launched its first Aspiring Superintendent's Academy in 2005 during the Detroit, Michigan conference which inspired the expansion of the Principal's Academy and the Teacher's Academy.

During his 35 years in education he has been a bus driver, teacher, principal, counselor, coach, superintendent, college professor, and associate commissioner of education. He has been recognized nationally as a principal and superintendent. As a principal of 4 different schools he significantly raised the achievement level of his students, as a superintendent he merged a failing district with his district and raised the achievement level of both districts to meet state standards and achieve national recognition for his innovative use of federal funds. As Kentucky's associate commissioner of education for Extended School Services, Primary Education, Family Youth Services and Equity he modeled and initiated Kentucky's first achievement gap support to districts throughout the state of Kentucky.

His vision includes supporting the Foundation goal of fully funding NABSE targeted projects. He also seeks regular input from the membership on the direction for NABSE. He will speak out boldly for children nationally, increase the visibility of affiliates, expand our professional development opportunities, and provide a model for growth and integrity to our future leaders and children.
