Dr. Charles R. Thomas, Sr. (NABSE Pres. 1985-87) passes away


It is with the deepest regret that we inform you of the passing of Dr. Charles R. Thomas, Sr. (NABSE Pres. 1985-87), this past Friday, January 22, 2010 after a long illness.

Charles Thomas originally hailed from Evanston Township HS.

After receiving his BA in Education from the University of Wisconsin as an outstanding student-athlete, he went on to obtain a Masters (1966) and Doctorate (1970) in from the School of Education at Northwestern, he went on to have a distinguished career in education in northern Illinois.

Dr. Thomas was sequentially a teacher and coach at Evanston Township HS (Evanston, IL), assistant HS principal (Evanston, IL), Â principal of Skiles Middle School (Evanston, IL), assistant superintendent of public instruction (northern district of Illinois), and finally a long-time large public school district superintendent (North Chicago, IL).

He also served on the external advisory board of overseers for the University of Wisconsin School of Education.

He and his wife, Juanita (former NABSE member) have been pioneers for innovative education to Black students in the Illinois public school community.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 6, 2010 @ 10 am at the Second Baptist Church (1717 Benson Avenue, Evanston, IL 60201).



December 26, 2009:
Geneva Watson Dean, president of the New York Alliance of Black School Educators passes away


It is with the deepest regret that we inform you of the passing of Mrs. Geneva Watson Dean, current president of the New York Alliance of Black School Educators. Mrs. Watson Dean transitioned from this life on December 24, 2009.

All home-going services will be on Tuesday, December 29th, at:
